Yet another Vietnamese leak today has revealed Apple's next MacBook update early. The plastic model will bump up to most of the specs of the 13-inch MacBook Pro, including its 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 250GB hard drive and GeForce 320M video, but as always will still have conscious limits to drive some buyers to the more expensive model. It should still carry 2GB of RAM and use a 7-hour battery compared to 10 for the aluminum MacBook Pro....

Apple chief Steve Jobs engaged in a rare involved debate late last evening where he defended his company's policies for the App Store. When criticized by blogger Ryan Tate for turning his back on "freedom" and "revolution," the company co-founder countered that the limits on sexual content and the approval process itself were about providing an ideal, safe experience. The real revolution was in breaking away from the traditional computing experience, Jobs answered....

Rumors of the new iPhone getting a 960x640 screen were supported today by claims from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Apple's new device will reportedly not only get the higher resolution but a much higher quality IPS (in-plane switching) panel with a relatively new technology to ease reading outdoors. Fringe-field switching, or FFS, would improve the viewing angles and readability in sunlight and is allegedly being used to improve the viability of iBooks on the iPhone, Kuo said....

The Japanese iPad 3G is not being locked exclusively to Softbank, an Apple spokeswoman clarifies. Softbank is the country's only official carrier of the device, as was revealed when rival NTT DoCoMo declared that it would abandon iPad plans. The situation is unexpected in that unlike the US, there is no basic technical barrier for other providers, and Apple has shown a growing preference for multiple device carriers per country....

The iPad version of GQ has only seen a little over 365 downloads so far, says VP and publisher Pete Hunsinger. All of these are associated with a December 2009 "Men of the Year" issue, though people can now get more recent releases, which may be selling better. At a cost of $2.99 per download, initial app sales are said to have been worth only $1,091.35 plus advertising to GQ publisher Condé Nast, minus Apple's 30 percent cut of app revenue....

April Mac numbers -- recorded by the NPD Group -- suggest that Apple will sell between 3.1 and 3.2 million Macs by the end of its third quarter, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. The estimated range is based on a 39 percent increase in domestic sales during April, and could still vary dramatically based on May and June sales, as well as international markets. If Apple manages Munster's target, the quarter will represent a growth of 19 to 23 percent year-over-year....

Naan Studio, the software developer behind Echofon Twitter apps, has detailed its experience dealing with the FTC over Google's acquisition of AdMob. In a company blog, staff member Chika suggests the FTC pressured her to criticize the deal despite Naan's overall support for the acquisition. The dialogue was described as more of an "interrogation," while the FTC reportedly dismissed the company's larger concern over Apple's rival deal with Quattro Wireless....

A faster 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo (up from 2.26GHz) represents its other major change....

Apple is staying quiet on why it refuses to accept cash payments for iPads, says San Francisco's KGO. The TV station notes that a local disabled woman, Diane Campbell, decided to make an iPad her first computer so she could advance her guitar playing. After saving small amounts of cash over several months, she eventually accumulated the $600 she needed to buy a 16GB Wi-Fi model. When she tried to pay for one at the Palo Alto Apple Store, however, she was rejected....

The launch of the Palm Pre was a flop in the market that Sprint is hoping to build on, the network's prepaid head Dan Schulman admitted in an investor's conference on Monday. He acknowledged that Palm's phone "didn't work out as well as we hoped" and blamed some of it on the supply issues for the Pre, which kept stock low even from launch and left many customers either getting another Sprint phone or turning to an alternative like the iPhone....

In a recent e-mail exchange with Gawker writer Ryan Tate, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that the App Store will provide customers with "freedom from porn." It was an interesting comment that has set off a firestorm of debate across the web over whether or not Apple should be offering pornographic apps in its mobile marketplace. Deciding on the best course of action is difficult, since both sides in the debate make solid arguments that can't be cast aside so quickly....

iPhone 4.0 beta 4 finally hints at AT&T data tethering

Apple tonight posted iPhone 4.0 beta 4 to the Developer Center with a strong clue that AT&T will finally enable data tethering. The new test release not only enables a "set up tethering" preference for American users but, when the menu is tapped, asks users to either call AT&T or to visit the carrier's website to turn the feature on. That it isn't automatically enabled suggests AT&T will charge an extra fee; for other smartphones, it normally charges an extra $30 per month....
